Guest Speaker Yaakov Malkin, founder and academic director of Meitar College of Judaism as Culture in Jerusalem, shares his insights into the faith, values, spirituality, literature and celebrations of secular Judaism. Secular Judaism affirms unequivocally that Judaism is more than a religion, that Judaism is a culture of the Jewish people, embracing within its fold the religious and the secular, the theist and the atheist, the capitalist and the socialist, the traditionalist and the radical – all united pluralistically in the enjoyment of its riches. For secular Jews, Judaism as a culture means full participation in the life of the Jewish people. But questions remain. If Judaism is culture and I am a cultural Jew, how do I lead my life as a Jew, especially as a Jew in the Diaspora? What do I read? What do I study? What do I celebrate? How do I celebrate? How do I connect my culture to my ethical values and my ethical action? What do I do to use my culture for personal inspiration and spiritual enrichment? Professor Yaakov Malkin, author of the newly published The Faith of Secular Jews, delves into these and other questions in the exploration of secular Judaism. Presented in cooperation with The Center for Cultural Judaism.
