As a portrait of the elite cohort which dominated Israeli society in its formative years, this original and sympathetic book carries almost total conviction.

What makes this well-written (and translated) work worthwhile for the general reader is its wide-ranging and systematic approach to the subject, and Almog's willingness to draw interesting conclusions that run counter to some of the accepted wisdom about the Sabra archetype.
