Vanishing Diaspora: The Jews in Europe since 1945

By Wasserstein, Bernard
Harvard University Press, 1997, Paperback, 352 pp., ISBN: 0674931998, $15.95

This work is a cultural and geographical examination of the Jewish population since the end of World War II - once a population of four million, their numbers have now halved.

It looks at why, despite their disappearing numbers, the Jewish question has not gone away.

Why is it that neither Hitler's "final solution" nor the communist, liberal, or Zionist prescriptions for grappling with the problem succeeded in eliminating it from the political and social agenda? Why is it still today a disturbing element in the politics of many European countries? The main purpose of this book is to address this cluster of questions and to suggest some new answers.
